Backporch on Chisholm St. Wharf

FOOD AND BEVERAGE CONCESSION, HOSPITALITY BRAND
SOUTH DELTA, BC

A concession brand inspired by the simple ritual of pulling up a chair at a friend’s table and staying awhile.

Backporch is a new concession and gathering space opening at Chisholm Street Wharf in Ladner, BC. The owners envisioned something that feels less like a traditional food venue and more like and more like relaxing on long summer evenings on a friend’s back porch.

The brand draws on retro seventies styling to capture that feeling. Warm earth tones, rounded typography, and relaxed illustration create a visual language that feels both curated and effortless.

THE ASK

As the owners prepared to open Backporch, they began looking for a creative partner who could help bring this vision to life.

The concept centres on creating an easy place to spend time along the waterfront. Guests might grab a morning coffee and baked good, meet friends for a beer in the evening, or simply settle into a chair and watch the activity along the wharf. The brand needed to reflect that sense of hospitality while introducing Backporch to the Delta community.

THE WORK

We began with a Discovery session to better understand the story behind Backporch and the atmosphere the owners hoped to create. From those conversations, the brand direction centred on themes of familiarity, neighbourhood connection, and nostalgia.

At the heart of the visual identity is the Adirondack chair. Found on patios, docks, and backyards across generations, the chair signals something instantly recognizable: a place to sit down and stay for a while. The chair appears throughout the brand as both a logo element and a supporting illustration, with the ability to carry the identity across menus, signage, merchandise, and apparel.

To anchor the concession in its surroundings, the brand also references the Chisholm Street Wharf in both the logo and supporting illustrations. This creates a flexible place brand system where elements can be swapped to grow with future locations while remaining rooted in the ideal of neighbourhood.

The result is a brand identity that captures the easy, social spirit of a back porch and introduces a new gathering space to the Delta community.
